My friend Elba shows me and my other friends where the bathroom is. The door has a printed sheet that says: “Gender Neutral-Just like in Switzerland.” Another sign says, “Just like the net, this bathroom is gender neutral.” We all look at each other, deciphering whether we should step foot in. Together? Or separately? How? What? Where? When? Why? A women? A man? Can brush their teeth right next to each other? Use the restroom in the next stall from one another? Shower right next to each other without feeling awkward? Well, as those questions swarmed our heads, we collectively decided what better way to make this experience less awkward than by just showering next to friends instead of strangers? So back to the room we went to gather all our clothes and toiletries, and then stormed back into the bathroom to call our showers. We danced. We sang. We laughed. Gender-Neutral bathrooms aren’t so bad, especially with friends.
p.s. On Saturday, my friends and I went to Vassar College to visit a friend. We had a great time catching up, learning about the school, playing cards against humanity and exploring the area. We also had fun taking a shower as you can see. The experience was too funny. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime college experience for me. Here’s to college culture shocks!
